A Cheese for Pinot Noirs!

We were doing some “homework” over the weekend to make sure that a cheese-wine pairing recommendation we had read about really worked.  So we unwrapped the little package and noticed earthy, bourbon notes and an aged leaf impression design along with a sweet-tart nose.  The first creamy taste was smooth and light with a nice edge and we concluded they were right…it’s the perfect cheese for Pinot Noirs! Here’s some more info about this little gem. Plus we’re featuring it this week on the cheese plate along with our Pinot Noir selection!  Come try some of both!

We were doing some “homework” over the weekend to make sure that a cheese/wine recommendation we had read about really did work. We unwrapped the little O’Banon cheese package and noticed earthy-bourbon notes and a lovely leaf impression and after the first little taste we were convinced this silky goat cheese was a perfect match. And the cheese looked so charming, I picked up my camera to share with you how beautiful the presentation is with the chestnuts leaves. We’ll be serving the O’Banon this weekend so come taste this combo for yourself.  Here’s a little more info that tells this cheese story…

O’Banon was named for the French chevre on which this cheese is based. These hand-ladled rounds of goat’s milk are made by Capriole Cheese in Greenville, Indiana and are wrapped in chestnut leaves that have been soaked in Old Kentucky bourbon. The tannins in the leaves and the bourbon combine to give this creamy, dense cheese a unique flavor that leaves a crisp bite on the palate. The paste is firm with a smooth, soft white texture. As they age about a month, the cheeses become a bit drier and intensify in flavor. O’Banon was awarded a 1st Place Ribbon, American Cheese Society Competition in Burlington, Vermont, 2007
